Routerlab (Lab course, SoSe 2014)

The Internet has grown to become one of the world's most remarkable engineering phenomena. The scope of the achievement is in the richness of its basic services and in the diversity of applications it offers. In this lab course we will set up IP networks. For this purpose, we will learn how to configure network devices such as switches and routers of the leading manufacturers Cisco and Juniper.

Topics of this course are routing protocols, IP multicast, packet forwarding, configuration of packet filters, traffic shaping (QoS), VPNs, PPP, AAA and monitoring and management of the network components. By configuring selected protocols, mechanisms and management functions on real router hardware, students are supposed to gain a better understanding of the Internet in general.

There will be a non-graded test during the preparatory meeting.

The number of participants is limited.

To participate in the Routerlab labcourse, you need basic knowledge in the following fields (We have also listed some simple example questions that you should be able to answer quickly, without looking things up):

  • IP addresses / subnetting

    • "What IP addresses lie in subnet"

  • Basic Networking hardware

    • "What's the difference between a router and a switch?"
    • "What's an interface?"

  • UNIX command line handling

    • "ssh into loadgenX"

  • Internet Routing protocols
