Abstract The advantage of mesh networks is that they forgo a central infrastructure completely. Network protocols like DHCP and DNS, however, are normally run on central servers. This results in several problems, since the mesh network would have to rely on a central infrastructure, which would also be a single point of failure. To solve this problem I extended a Chord-based DHT network I had developed for my semester project so that it was able to provide both protocols. This approach allows the operation of DHCP and DNS without central servers, since every node of the DHT network works as a server. This is advantageous because server crashes can now no longer influence the availability of the protocols. The main focus of this thesis is on the DHCP protocol. It was confirmed that the use of a DHT network is, regarding the robustness against failures, beneficial. However, it might introduce performance problems in terms of response times as the DHT network gets larger. The DNS protocol was also evaluated, however focussing on correctness rather than performance.
