Zusammenfassung Nowadays wireless communications are more and more important. However, unstable and unpredictable wireless links make it difficult for traditional routing protocols to pre-determine a shortest path between wireless nodes. In order to improve the performance of wireless mesh networks, several opportunistic routing protocols are designed to take advantage of the broadcast nature of the wireless medium. Simple Opportunistic Adaptive Routing Protocol (SOAR) is an example of opportunistic routing protocols. There is already a SOAR implementation based on the Click modular router in the Berlin Open Wireless Lab (BOWL) testbed, yet the centralized topology discovery mechanism is not quite scalable. Thus this thesis implements an online and distributed way to collect topology information for SOAR, which exploits functionalities of existing software: olsrd and the Click element LinkTable. SOAR with this online topology discovery mechanism is deployed on a number of wireless nodes in the BOWL smoketest testbed, and the performance of SOAR is compared with traditional routing by IEEE 802.11 standard. According to the experimental results, the performance of SOAR benefits from additional forwarders, and results in higher throughputs and lower packet loss rates.
