Abstract | The BGP Routing Information Base (RIB) in the default free zone is growing linearly, causing scalability problems. The operational expenses for maintaining, updating, provisioning, and managing this large amount of entries makes the Internet less cost-effective. This BGP inflation is mainly due to single numbering space, multi-homed stub networks, the way traffic engineering is implemented and the network address allocation policy. To tackle these problems and avoid a potential crisis in the Internet Routing Architecture the implementation of the Locator/ID Separation Protocol (LISP) is proposed. The main idea of the LISP protocol is to split the IP addressing space in two orthogonal spaces, one used to identify the end-hosts, and one used to locate them in the internet topology. LISP does not only allow to reduce the size of BGP's routing tables, but it also allow address independence, multi-homing, and light weight traffic engineering. |
