ISP-Application Collaboration using Provider-aided Distance Information System

Abstract Popular applications generate voluminous amount of content that has to be delivered to a large and volatile population of users. The largest fraction of this content is hosted by the new ''hyper giants'' which includes large content providers such as Google, hosting content distribution networks, such as Akamai, one-click hosters such as RapidShare, and cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services. The above-mentioned hosting/delivery systems perform their own traffic flow optimization and realize this using the DNS system. While such systems may, to some extent, consider the user's performance within their optimization criteria, they currently have no incentive to consider any of the ISP's constraints. As a consequence, the ISP has lost control over a major part of its traffic and at the same time end-user experience may. Moreover, hosting/delivery systems are, at large, unaware of the exact location of the end-user as well as the network operating characteristics. This contributes to the degradation of the overall end-user experience. To overcome these impairments, we propose a solution where the ISP offers a Provider-aided Distance Information System (PaDIS). PaDIS uses information available only to the ISP to rank any client-host pair based on distance information, such as delay, bandwidth or number of hops. Our results show that the applicability of the system is significant. More than 70\% of the dominant HTTP traffic can be accessed via multiple different locations. Moreover, they show that deploying PaDIS is not only beneficial to ISPs, but also to users. Experiments with different content providers show that improvements in download times of up to a factor of four are possible.
